The dragon tree can be found in the Garajonay National Park, between the two towns of Alajero and Imada, in the Barranco de Tajonaje gorge. From a botanical point of view, by the way, it is not a tree at all, but a lily plant. The dragon tree blooms only every 15 years and subsequently bears magnificent fruits of an orange-yellow colour. The tree, also known as "Drago", was considered sacred by the Guanches in earlier times: the red resin was said to have healing powers. Because of this, the sap of the dragon tree was also used to make ointments and medicines and was used to mummify the dead. It is reported that on Tenerife there should have been complete forests of dragon trees until the 15th century.
