Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi, is a bustling metropolis of friendly locals, beautiful green spaces, and rich culture. With both old and new towns, it offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity surrounded by the wilderness of Africa's warm heart.

Driving in Lilongwe

A different side of the road

Remember, in Malawi, you drive on the left, the same as in Britain. So, you'll immediately feel right at home cruising on Malawi's roads.

Speed limits and traffic rules

Speed limits range from 30km/h in towns to 80km/h on open roads and 100km/h on highways. Stick to these limits as speed cameras are common and fines can be substantial. It's also a good idea to brush up on your traffic signs as some might be different from those back home.

Car Rental

Pick Up and Drop Off

You can pick up your rental car at Kamuzu International Airport, about 25km outside Lilongwe. Most rentals include unlimited mileage, allowing you to explore to your heart's content. When planning your return, allow for traffic and return your car with a full tank of fuel to avoid additional charges.

Choosing the Right Car

For big families and groups, an SUV or van would be suitable. Sedan-type vehicles could prove tricky on rural roads. Considering fuel efficiency, smaller cars could be a best fit if you're sticking to city driving.

Attractions

Lilongwe offers an array of attractions from the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, home to the country's only sanctuary for rescued, orphaned and injured wildlife, to the Old Town - a hub of local shops and markets. Make a stop at the Kumbali Cultural Village for an immersive Malawian experience.

Climate

Be prepared for slightly different weather from Britain. Lilongwe has a tropical wet and dry climate, with a hot rainy season from November to April and a cooler dry season from May to October.

Money Matters

Malawi's local currency is the Malawian Kwacha (MWK). Cash is king here; however, credit cards are widely accepted in major city centres. Remember to keep some change for road tolls and parking fees.

We wish you an amazing adventure in Lilongwe, and remember, we’re here to help you find the best car rental deals to make your travels smooth, affordable, and unforgettable.
