Discover Copenhagen by hired car

Copenhagen Harbor

Hire a car in Copenhagen and discover the capital region of Denmark. We work with all the major car hire companies in Copenhagen, so you can choose from a wide range of offers. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and coastline of the Danish capital. A trip over the Öresund bridge to Malmö, about 30 minutes away, is also worthwhile. If you have several days to spare, a road trip along the Baltic Sea to Stockholm is also worthwhile.
Copenhagen, with its almost 600,000 inhabitants, is one of the metropolises in northern Europe and is always worth a visit. The capital city by the sea offers a lot for every taste and the numerous sights can be explored comfortably by hired car. A hired car does not only bring advantages in Copenhagen itself, but also offers the possibility to discover the whole country in a comfortable and flexible way.

Where to hire a car in Copenhagen

Flughafen Kopenhagen

Both in the city and in the Airport Kastrup are numerous car hire companies to hire a car. The opening hours of the car hire companies at the airport are often particularly good and special vehicles such as convertibles or jeeps can also be hired here without any problems. You are spoilt for choice with which vehicle you want to discover Copenhagen! Also, it is much more comfortable to pick up the hired car directly at the airport after your arrival, because then you don’t have to worry about how to get to your accommodation.

Why do you have to leave a deposit?

Without leaving a deposit it’s nearly impossible to hire a car. The deposit has an important role for the car hire companies, because it serves as safety for the rental companies. You pay a high sum to the rental company or the rental company blocks the sum of money on your credit card for a short amount of time, mostly until you return the hired car. The company will return the full sum you payed if the car is in the same condition as it was at the rental and if you stuck to the contract. If you violated traffic rules and have for example been flashed, the rental company will keep the amount of the fine from the deposit and send you the rest of the deposit back.

Road traffic laws in Denmark - what needs to be respected?

In Denmark, right to left applies. But bicyclists always have the right of way before car drivers - especially in Copenhagen you should be prepared for this.
Even during the day, cars and motorcycles must drive with the lights on. The horn should only be and in emergencies and mobiles should only be used through headsets or the hands-free device.
It is compulsory to wear a seat belt and children under 135 cm must be transported in a child seat. Children under 3 years of age are transported in appropriate child seats. Ask before you hire a car at the pick-up for a suitable child seat.

Maximum speed and tolls on Danish roads

Öresund bridge

Speed limits in Denmark are, 50 km/h after a sign with the city symbol, which means in inner cities. Do not drive more than 80 km/h on country roads and 130 km/h on highways, except if it’s differently written on a sign. Also cars with trailers are not allowed to drive faster than 80 km/h on highways and 70 km/h on country roads.
So far there are no tolls on Danish roads, except for the Storebaelt bridge and the Öresund bridge. The toll payment station are on both bridges clear to see and signs help you to find the right track.

Car hire and parking in Denmark

Street in Copenhagen

Anyone who hires a car in Copenhagen or elsewhere in Denmark should follow the parking rules - a ticket is issued quickly and costs about more than 70 €. Parking bans should be strictly respected and at intersections you should keep a distance of about 10 meters to the street corner or junction.
Parking is usually subject to a charge, especially in the city center. There are parking fees in Copenhagen from Monday to Saturday from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm. Also, ask the rental company at the pick-up for a parking disc , if you can’t find one in the car, it could become handy for you.

Spend spring and summer in Copenhagen

Tivoli Lake in Copenhage

Tivoli Lake

The Scandinavian countries should be travelled to in spring and summer rather than in winter, because the temperatures in winter are unbearably cold. In spring the temperatures are also not the highest of Europe, but still a lot warmer than in winter. Like that you can discover the sights and the culture in peace. You can hire for one day a bike to find some sights or the promenades. You can also swim in the sea or enjoy the sun at the beach. Do a harbor cruise or enjoy the view of Copenhagen for free on the Christiansborg Slot. Spend one day at the Tivoli-Parc and think back about your childhood or surprise your children. You could as well take a kayak course through one of the many canals in Copenhagen. As you can see there are a lot of things to do in Copenhagen in spring and summer and this was just a little list of all the things you can do.
