Visby, famously known as "the town of roses and ruins", boasts a picturesque mix of historical sites. Its well-secured walls, lush gardens, and cobblestone streets have earned it the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Although Visby is one of the smaller cities in Sweden, renting a car gives you more freedom to explore at your own pace. With various car rental services offered at Visby Airport and in the city, you can conveniently choose one that suits your budget and comfort needs.
Driving in Visby is fairly relaxed, with less traffic compared to bigger cities. Do note, however, that Sweden drives on the right side of the road, unlike in the UK. Roundabouts are also common, where traffic coming from the left has priority.
Most of Visby’s attractions are within walking distance in the city centre, but having a car allows you to explore beyond the city. Gotland’s beautiful coastal roads and quaint villages like Ljugarn and Burgsvik are worth a drive. There’s ample parking available throughout Visby, though do keep an eye out for parking signs to avoid fines.
Visby experiences a temperate oceanic climate. Summers are pleasantly warm while winters are milder compared to other Swedish cities. It's advisable to check the weather forecast before your trip.
Sweden's official currency is the Swedish Krona (SEK), and credit cards are widely accepted. ATMs are easily available if you need cash.
Visby is renowned for its annual Medieval Week in August where the entire city is turned into a medieval market with activities and reenactments. Booking your trip around this time can be an enriching experience.
Safe travels, and enjoy your Visby adventure!
