Located 8 km to the south of Taupo town, Taupo Airport (TUO) is one of the busiest regional airports in New Zealand. It may be small in size, but it certainly offers you excellent facilities and a welcoming start to your Kiwi journey. Look no further than this laid-back airport for your car rental needs; it houses several reputed rental car companies such as Avis, Budget and Hertz.
Unlike the roundabouts prevalent in the UK, in New Zealand, intersections are more common. Moreover, keep in mind that Kiwis drive on the left side of the road, just as you’re used to. One thing to note though, distances are often greater than anticipated due to the mountainous terrain, so ensure to plan your journeys accordingly.
From the airport, it's a swift 15 minutes drive to the town of Taupo. The airport serves as a brilliant starting point for mesmerising road trips around the North Island with its direct routes to Rotorua, Napier, and the famous Tongariro National Park.
Running out of gas is the last thing you want on your adventure. Luckily, there are several petrol stations in the vicinity. The closest one is approximately 2km from the airport, on Centennial Drive.
New Zealand has a temperate maritime climate – that’s a change from the colder UK winters! Taupo, in particular, enjoys a cool oceanic climate with mild summers and cool winters. Do remember to pack a rain jacket as showers can be frequent.
The official currency is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). ATMs and exchange facilities are available at the airport and around the town of Taupo. If you're using a credit card from the UK, consider the foreign transaction fees.
Taupo airport is a gateway to some of the North Island’s most stunning attractions. Apart from Taupo town, other must-visit cities within a three-hour drive include Napier, known for its Art Deco architecture, Rotorua - a geothermal wonderland, and our capital city Wellington.
With ample open roads and well-maintained highways, a standard or economy car class would be enough for your trip. However, for added comfort and safety on mountainous terrains, an SUV or a 4-wheel drive can be an excellent choice.
Safe travels, and enjoy your Kiwi adventure!
