Driving in Germany vs. the UK

Right Side Driving

Just a reminder, unlike in the UK, in Germany, you drive on the right side of the road. Also, the driver's seat is on the left-hand side of the car. It might take a little while to adapt, but you'll get used to it in no time.

Speed limits

The motorways (Autobahnen) in Germany has parts without a definite speed limit. However, there's a recommended speed limit of 130 km/h (about 81 mph). Urban areas have a speed limit of 50 km/h (approximately 31 mph) and 100 km/h (about 62 mph) on roads outside urban areas.

Must-see sights

Salzwedel may be small, but it is brimming with history and culture. Be sure to check out the following attractions:

  • Neuperver Tor: One of the most intact city gates in North Germany.
  • St. Katharinen Church: An impressive brick Gothic church with a striking interior.
  • Ships Mill: A floating mill, one of the few remaining in Europe.

Selecting the right car class

The car class that suits you best depends on your travel plans. If you plan to stay within the city, a small car would be suitable due to its agility in narrow streets. For longer trips into the countryside or with family, an estate might be the better choice.

Parking in Salzwedel

On-street parking in Salzwedel is plentiful and often free of charge, particularly in residential areas. There are also several car parks available around the city.
