Located in Avarua District, Rarotonga International Airport is the primary international gateway to the Cook Islands. Unlike many UK airports, Rarotonga International Airport is relatively small, giving you a charming and less crowded experience right from the moment you land.
At Rarotonga International Airport, there are several car rental companies, ready to provide you with the best vehicle option to suit your holiday needs. This includes international companies such as Budget and Avis, as well as local ones like Go Cook Islands Car Hire and Island Car & Bike Hire.
Unlike the UK, where vehicles are driven on the left-hand side of the road, in Rarotonga, cars are driven on the right-hand side of the road. It's not a big change, but still something to keep in mind. Road speed limits are lower than you may be used to back in Britain, with 50 km/h the maximum speed limit on most of the island, reducing to 30 km/h near villages and schools.
Given the relaxed and laid-back nature of Rarotonga’s roads, compact cars are often the ideal choice. However, if you’re travelling as a family or group, SUVs provide both comfort and ample space for luggage, making them a fantastic choice.
There are a handful of petrol stations on the island, located in and around Avarua town. Prices can be slightly higher than what you'd expect in the UK, so make sure to budget accordingly for fuel.
There are two main roads that circle the island - Ara Tapu (the coast road) and Ara Metua (the inner road). From the airport, it's a short drive to Avarua, the bustling capital full of local markets and attractions.
The climate in the Cook Islands is tropical, averaging 24°C throughout the year - quite a contrast to the changeable British weather. No need for heated seats in your hire car here!
The official currency is New Zealand dollars (NZD). ATMs are available at the airport and in Avarua where you can withdraw cash. Credit cards are widely accepted.
Avarua is the closest town, easy to reach within minutes from the airport. Further afield, cities like Origin, Mangaia, and Manuae make for great day trips.
