Orvieto, like many Italian towns, has its quirks when it comes to driving. The city centre is a Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL), which means non-residents are not allowed to drive here. Watch out for these zones as fines can be hefty!
Road signs in Italy are also slightly different from those in the UK. The stop sign, for instance, is a red octagon with the word 'STOP', just like what you see in Britain. However, the 'no entry' sign in Italy is a red circle with a white horizontal bar – unlike the UK's red circle with a white rectangle in the middle.
The streets of Orvieto are narrow and winding, typical for medieval towns. A smaller car, like a compact or economy class, is recommended for easier navigating and parking. Convertibles are also popular for enjoying the scenic drives in and around the city.
With the ZTL in place, parking can be a bit tricky in Orvieto. The city has several secure parking facilities like Parking Campo della Fiera and Parking Foro Boario, both located at the base of the cliff. An elevator or a funicular can take you from these parking areas straight to the city centre.
Your Orvieto adventure doesn't have to stop at the city limits. Use your rental car to visit surrounding cities. Rome is just an hour and a half away, while the beautiful towns of Perugia and Siena are also nearby.
Italy uses the Euro (€). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, but it's always a good idea to carry some cash, especially when visiting smaller towns and local markets.
Orvieto has a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and cool winters. The city hosts a jazz festival in December and a colourful Corpus Christi procession in June – both are must-see events!
