Matsuyama, the largest city in the Shikoku region of Japan, is a treasure trove of cycling routes, beautiful architecture, and inviting hot springs. While it’s not as busy as Tokyo or Osaka, it’s filled to the brim with charm that will leave you wanting more.
In Matsuyama, compact cars are to go for, as they are flexible and perfect for navigating the narrow city streets. Moreover, dedicated parking spaces are often tiny, so a smaller vehicle will make parking easier.
The Japanese drive on the left-hand side, just like back home in the UK, so you should have no trouble adapting. However, bear in mind that speed limits are usually lower in Japan. Residential zones have a limit of 30 km/h, while city roads allow 40-50 km/h. Highways can go up to 100 km/h.
Most public parking spaces are automated, and instructions may only be in Japanese. Hiring a car with GPS navigation can help you find car parks, as they are programmed to recognise them. Prices usually start from around ¥200 per hour.
The Shimanami Kaido is a spectacular highway that connects the islands of the Seto Inland Sea with bridges, offering stunning views along the way. Start at Imabari, a short drive north from Matsuyama, and take your time exploring the islands along the route.
Matsuyama experiences all four seasons, with beautiful cherry blossoms in spring, festivals in summer, spectacular colours in autumn, and occasionally a dusting of snow in winter. The Dogo Onsen Art festival, held from December to March, is truly a sight to behold with various events such as light-ups and art exhibitions.
Credit cards aren't as widely accepted in Japan as they are in the UK, so remember to have enough yen – the local currency – on hand. English is not widely spoken outside of major cities, so a translation app can come in handy.
Matsuyama, with its mix of history and modernity, offers an experience that is uniquely Japanese. Renting a car will allow you to explore this beautiful city and its surroundings at your own pace, crafting an unforgettable trip. Remember to respect local customs and driving rules, and you’re sure to have a fantastic time!
