Located in Yunnan Province, south-west China, KMG is the key international airport serving Kunming city, an important aviation hub to South-East Asia. It's ranked as one of China's busiest airports with state-of-the-art amenities and numerous domestic and international flights.

Car Rental Stations at the Airport

Good news! Numerous car hire companies have desks at KMG, including international and local providers. These are conveniently situated in the arrival area of the airport. Remember to have your driver's license and passport with you when you pick up your car.

Driving in China

Notably different than driving in the UK, China drives on the right side of the road and the steering wheel is located on the left side of the car. Fuel stations are plentiful, operating 24/7 and accept major credit cards for payment. Please be aware that you will need a temporary Chinese driving permit to drive in China as UK licenses are not accepted.

Routes and Accessibility

The airport is conveniently connected to the central Kunming city by the G108 national highway. If you're ready for a scenic drive, the route via the G56 Hangzhou-Ruili Expressway offers beautiful panorama views.

Climate and Currency

Popularly known as the 'City of Eternal Spring', Kunming features a pleasant climate with mild temperatures and limited rainfall. Be prepared for the Yuan (CNY), Chinese local currency, ensuring to have some handy for toll fares and parking charges.

Surrounding Cities and Attractions

There's no shortage of attractions near Kunming. You can visit Dian Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan province or take a peek at the ancient city of Dali. For the adventurous, a drive to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lijiang should not be missed.

A Word of Advice

To make your journey smoother, we recommend opting for an automatic car if you're unfamiliar with driving on the right-hand side. It provides a more convenient and less stressful driving experience.

So, plan ahead, prepare for a different driving experience, and make your Chinese road trip an unforgettable adventure.
