Nestled in the western part of Russia in the Kaliningrad oblast, Khrabrovo Airport is a buzzing hub for travellers. This modern airport is well equipped with the most common amenities like eating places, shopping facilities, and more.
Upon arrival at the airport, you'll notice a handful of car rental agencies operating. Some of the leading brands like Hertz, Europcar, and Sixt offer their services here, making it easy for you to book a car of your choice, right from compact to luxury vehicles.
Here's your first tip! Unlike in the UK where driving is on the left, in Russia, you drive on the right side of the road. This might take some getting used to but in no time, you'd be cruising along the Russian traffic with ease.
Once you've picked up your rental car, it's time to explore! The capital city of Kaliningrad is about 20km away from the airport. With your rental car, you'd reach there in approximately 30-40 minutes by taking the P239 highway.
On your way out of the airport, you’ll notice a few petrol stations. Make sure to fill up the tank before starting your journey. Remember, in Russia, petrol stations dispense fuel in litres, not gallons as in the UK.
When you get to Russia, you'll need to use the local currency, the Ruble (RUB). Be sure to have some rubles on you for small expenses like road tolls or parking fees which typically cannot be paid with a card.
Now let's talk about the weather. Russia can get pretty cold especially from November to March. When booking your car, you might want to ensure it's equipped with winter tires or even opt for an SUV to tackle the snow laden roads.
From the verdant forests of Kaliningrad to the historic landmarks in Moscow, your rental car gives you the freedom to discover Russia at your own pace. So, buckle up and get ready for the ride of your life!
