Cusco is a city in the southeastern part of Peru. It is the capital of the region of Cusco and its metropolitan area. With a population of approximately 435,000 residents, it is a bustling city in the heart of the Andes and was a major hub of the Incan Empire.

Climate

The climate in Cusco is divided into two distinct seasons. The dry season runs from May to October and the wet season from November to April. The average temperature is around 14°C, quite different from the UK's climate.

Driving in Cusco

Driving in Cusco can be challenging due to the hilly terrain and winding roads. Therefore, if you're hiring a rental car, an automatic would be the best fit. In Peru, traffic drives on the right side of the road, keep that in mind if you are used to driving on the left as in the UK.

Historic Centre of Cusco

Cusco’s historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, you will see a mix of Inca and Spanish colonial structures.

Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu

A short drive from Cusco leads you to the Sacred Valley, which has a number of Incan archaeological sites. From the town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, you can take a train to Aguas Calientes, the base town for visiting the iconic Machu Picchu.

The Inti Raymi is a colourful and exciting festival that takes place in Cusco every June 24th. This festival commemorates the Incan Festival of the Sun and is one of the most visited cultural events in the country.
