Just 10 kilometres from the Italian mainland lies the ancient island of Elba. This island is about 224 square meter big and is part of the Tuscan archipelago. Therefore it's a popular destination among tourists who stay in the Tuscany region. There's a ferry leaving from Piombino for the island a few times per hour. However, Elba is far too beautiful and too big to be seen in one day! With a hireal car you will tour the island in several days and get a more complete picture of Elba, its beauty and history.
The only airport on Elba is the Aeroporto di Marina di Campo. The airport is located in the south of the Italian island and about two kilometres away from Campo nell Elba. The airport is easily accessible via the main road SP25. Pick up your hireal car at the airport and drop it off before your departure just before your plane leaves, ideal! Book your car online before departure and you can enjoy your holiday immediately upon arrival.
Elba has a number of idyllic beaches where you can enjoy Italian life and of course the sun. On the beaches of Cavoli, Portoferraio and Fetovaia you can stroll over the white sand and enjoy the endless, blue-green water.
In total, the island has about 130 beaches, so plenty of choice. Sandy, pebble or rocky beaches, it's all possible. Get in your hireal car and drive from beach to beach. Take some pictures on one beach and get a tan on the other. Beach hopping is great! At the end of your holiday you've definitely put together a top 3 of your favourite beaches on Elba.
In Portoferraio there is more to see than just the beach. By being the islands capital, it offers a lot of fun, entertainment and culture. The city is located in a beautiful bay. Choose from one of the many restaurants with sea views, enjoy the Italian cucina and we promise you'll never want to leave! Just like the islands history itself, the history of Portoferraio also goes far back. Portoferraio was founded around 1550 by the then Grand Duke of Tuscany and in the following centuries was also ruled by dukes. In 1814 the island was transferred to Napoleon who was also banished to the island later on. The many forts on the higher parts of Portoferraio (and the house of Napoleon!) are remnants of this turbulent time.
For entertainment you can also visit the nice (coastal) towns Marciana Marina, Marina di Campo, Porto Azurro and Capoliveri. A wide range of beaches, hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops and nightlife are waiting for you here! Marsciano also has a small medieval center, so you should definitely make a stop here. Drive from Marciana Marina to Poggio up to Marciana, S. Andrea, Pomonte and Marina di Campo. Then you can drive inland towards Procchio and return to Marciana Marina.
Italians are not really known as the best drivers in the world so it is advisable to insure your hireal car well. Still, in practice it often turns out to be not too bad and driving on Italian territory is fine. On Elba the same traffic rules apply as with us, but remember that the traffic is right-handed. The only thing you have to pay attention to is that the middle lane on a three-lane road is meant to be overtaken and that fines have to be paid in cash. You'd rather avoid that, right? So keep to the speed limits.
