Located 25 miles northwest of Xi'an city centre, Xianyang International airport is the gateway to the ancient city of Xi'an. With three terminals, the airport serves as an important hub for flights within China and beyond.
Upon arrival, you'll find several car rental companies at the airport - with service counters located in the arrival halls of Terminal 2 and 3. Some of the well-known names include Avis, Hertz, and local providers such as China Auto Rental.
Unlike the UK, driving in China requires an International Driving Permit (IDP), alongside your UK driving license. Do remember to apply for an IDP before leaving the UK, as it's not available once abroad.
The official currency in China is the Yuan (¥). Most car rental companies accept major credit cards, but it's always beneficial to have some cash ready for smaller expenses such as tolls and parking fees.
Buckle up! Safety belts are compulsory for all vehicle occupants. Importantly, unlike the UK, driving is on the right-hand side of the road in China.
From the airport, the fastest route to reach Xi'an city centre is via the Xi'an-Hanzhong highway, roughly a 40-minute drive. Alternatively, take the Airport Express road for a scenic drive through the countryside.
Several petrol stations are scattered near the airport. Sinopec Petrol Station and CNPC are two of them, located less than 10 miles from the airport. Be aware that payment is usually by cash.
While Xi'an is famous for its terracotta warriors, don't miss out on exploring nearby cities like Xianyang and Weicheng. They're just a short drive away and boast unique cultural and historical sites.
Xi'an, like the UK, has four distinct seasons. But it's generally hotter in summer (June-August) and colder in winter (December-February). Keep these in mind when planning your trip.
Now that you're all set, let your adventure begin. Drive safely, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination!
