Kobe Airport is a city airport located on the artificial island in the city's port area in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. The airport serves as a gateway to the Kansai region, offering excellent connections to Kobe, Osaka, and Kyoto. It's a relatively small airport and notably welcoming for English-speaking visitors with signs and directions available in English.
Several car rental companies operate from Kobe Airport. Most of them have English-speaking staff to cater to international visitors. The rental desks are based in the arrival hall, just follow the "Car Hire" signs.
You'll find that compact cars are pretty popular in Japan, thanks to their easy manoeuvrability in dense traffic and smaller parking spaces. Given Kobe's similar urban density, a small to mid-size car is apt for city exploration.
Road etiquette in Japan may be a bit different from that in the UK. In Japan, you always drive on the left side of the road. Speed limits are generally lower with most city roads set at 40 km/h and highways maxing out at 100 km/h. Also, digital navigation systems, known locally as 'Navi', are standard in most cars and can be set to English.
There are many petrolstations within a few kilometres of Kobe Airport. These are generally open 24 hours and offer both self-service and full-service options.
The local currency is the Japanese yen (¥). While credit cards are widely accepted, many smaller establishments only accept cash. It's also worth noting that contactless mobile payments, such as Apple Pay or Google Wallet, are not as common, especially outside of Tokyo.
Tipping is not customary in Japan and may often be refused. It's better to simply pay the price asked for any services and products.
Depending on the time of your visit, you could experience the hot, humid summers (June – August) or the chilly winters (December – February) in Kobe. Due to Japan's rainy season – the tsuyu, it's advisable to pack an umbrella, especially if travelling May to July.
The Airport Limousine Bus and the Port Liner light rail link Kobe Airport to the city centre. There are also ferries to Kansai International Airport. But, of course, with your rental car, you'll have the flexibility to travel beyond the city limits and explore the rich history and culture of the Kansai region.
