One of the best ways to explore Erfurt and its surroundings is by car. Here are some useful tips:
- Drive on the right side: Unlike in the UK, driving in Germany is on the right-hand side of the road. The driver seat and controls are on the left.
- Speed limits: In urban areas it's 50 km/h, expressways (Schnellstraßen) it's 100 km/h, and on the autobahns, it's usually advised to not exceed 130 km/h.
- Parking: It's possible to find parking in the city but remember to pay at the parking meter.
Car Hire Tips
Choose the perfect car for your journey.
- Eco cars: For the environmentally conscious traveller, look for vehicles with lower CO2 emissions.
- Space: Opt for a larger car if you're travelling with family or have a lot of luggage.
Attractions to Visit
Be sure not to miss these must-see spots in Erfurt:
- Erfurt Cathedral: A magnificent 14th-century cathedral towering over the city.
- Krämerbrücke: One of Europe’s longest inhabited bridges, filled with quaint artisan shops.
Exploring the surroundings
Extend your adventure with a drive to the nearby cities:
- Weimar: Just a 30-minute drive away, Weimar is the European Capital of Culture and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Eisenach: Home to Wartburg Castle, it's less than an hour's drive from Erfurt.
The Climate and When to Visit
Erfurt enjoys a temperate seasonal climate, much like the UK. The summers are comfortable and winters can get quite cold. It's beautiful all year round but the best time to visit is during spring (April-June) and autumn (September-November).
Local Currency
What's the local currency? It’s the Euro (€). You'll find plenty of ATMs and most places accept card payments.
Seasonal Events
Every year, Erfurt hosts a Christmas market that’s quite magical. If you're visiting in summer, don't miss the DomStufen-Festival, an open-air theatre event held at the Cathedral.
Prepare for a delightful journey exploring Erfurt's rich culture, stunning architecture, friendly people, and delicious food. Remember, your adventure starts as soon as you get in the car, so make the most of every moment!
